Here is the unforgettable overture from the iconic Broadway musical - arguably the most exciting, classic, ultimate overture in the history of the musical stage: 'Gypsy'. The music for the 1959 production was composed by Jule Styne, and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim. The show business force of nature known as Ethel Merman was the star of the show, as 'Mama Rose', and Jack Klugman (later 'The Odd Couple' on TV) and Sandra Church provided wonderful support as Herbie and Louise ('Gypsy Rose Lee' herself). When the musical reached the screen in 1962, Warner Bros. Purchased the rights, and Rosalind Russell was cast in lieu of Merman. (Natalie Wood was given the title role of 'Gypsy', and Karl Malden appeared as 'Herbie'.) This casting decision caused almost as much criticism as when - a year or so later - Audrey Hepburn would be cast in Julie Andrews' role as Eliza in the film version of 'My Fair Lady'. Obviously, Jack Warner liked to do his own casting! However, Ethel Merman held most of her vitriol for Freddie Brisson, Rosalind Russell's husband/manager - who reportedly secured the role of Mama Rose for his wife.
